On Page Optimization




On page SEO is the process of improving search ranking of a website using various methods and modifications with in the website. On page optimization can make the website easily crawlable by the search engine. In order to optimize a web page, we need to follow the SEO guidelines published by the search engine.


Factors to be considered in On Page Optimization


  • URL

Use a URL address which is related to the content, that give hints to the search engine about the content of the website and makes the crawling process more easy.

  • Head Section:

 Head section of a HTML page contains title and meta tags. Meta tags are the descriptions     inside the title tags which helps to get recognized by the search engine crawlers. If  title is     not give or a given title is not accepted  by search engine, H1 or H2 tags might get considered as title. While optimizing the title tag , the following points have to be  considered:-
    1. Try to include the focusing keywords to form a meaningful title.
    2. Title should be attractive to the users.
    3. Omit any spelling or grammatical errors. 
    4. Avoid using complete capital letters or small letters either.
    5. Try not to exceed the pixel with limitation for a SEO title ie; 512 pixel. if the title exceed this limitation, the following portion of a title will be displayed in dots.
    6. Try to give a unique title or else it may lead to cannibalism between the website with same or similar title. Also Google search console might detect Title duplicacy error.
    7. Title length should be more than three words, short titles must be avoided.
    8. Try to give a relevant title that clarifies the content.
    9. Maximum limit shouldn't exceed 55 to 60 characters .
    • Meta description: It is the description about the website shown in an organic search result snippet. It gives a brief idea to the user about the content of the web site. If there are impression for a website but the ranking is not improving, in this case mostly modification in meta description can help.While optimizing meta description, the following points to be noted:
      1. Maximum length for a web page is between 155-160 characters but for blogs or article maximum limit will 150 characters. This is because the publishing date of blog or article will be included in meta description.
      2. Try not to exceed the pixel width limit of 1024 pixel.
      3. Avoid grammar or spelling errors.
      4. Give a relevant description of the web page or website.
      5. It should be attractive, as it is crucial to increase visitors to website.
      6. Try to avoid meta description duplication by giving unique brief. Even the content from the body can be taken to give an apt and unique description.

    • Keyword Meta tags: Providing keywords help the website to get identified and analysed by the search engine crawler correctly. Though Google doesn't consider the keywords anymore as website ranking factor, accurate use of keywords can be useful.

    • Robot Meta tags: This meta tag helps to give instructions to the web crawler or bots. This helps to set webpage priorities such as privacy policy etc.
          <meta name="robots" content="index, follow/> to index a page and follow the hyper link.
    • NOODP (No Description from Open directory Project): Open Directory project lists the history of websites and its activities based on its popularity. There is a possibility for Google to consider or process this information and estimate the website based on that information. Using this meta tag gives instruction to the web crawlers for not to consider Open Directory Project.

    • No image index: This meta tag gives instruction to the crawler not to index image, such as to avoid copyright issues.

  • Body :

   This portion of a HTML page of a website contains the major content of a webpage. It         includes heading tags ie; <H1>, <H2>, <H3>. The points to be noted while optimising         the content are:
    • Try to use simple sentences. Use of complex sentence might create confusion for website users.
    • Try to avoid lengthy sentences and convey information with clarity.
    • Avoid grammar or spelling error.
    • Try to keep a focusing keyword in the opening sentence, thus the website users can get a clarity about the content from the beginning itself.
    • Reading ease score of a webpage will be analysed by Google as a ranking factor. Thus the contents can be easily read and understood by the users.
    • It is advisable to include images to explain the text. Images can definitely help to expand the attention span of viewers.
    • Use the keywords accurately. Using focusing keywords properly can improve the crawlability of a webpage. However avoid keyword stuffing.
    • Avoid use of broken links or images. It can affect the efficacy and SEO ranking of a website negatively.
  • H1 tag should not be lengthy or irrelevant or inappropriate. Relevant heading to the topic can avoid any confusion among users. It should be attractive and with no errors. There must be only one H1 tag for a webpage, if there are more than one H1 tags are used, it may lead to confusion among the web crawlers. Title, meta description and H1 tag of a webpage should be correlated.

  • Image Optimization:
    • Do not give space between image file name and it should be apt..
    • Make alignment for the image.
    • Give relevant Alt name for an image thus the content can be easily identified by the Google.
    • Incase of giving hyperlink as an image, the Alt name of the image will be considered as the anchor text. Thus avoid using a keyword as Alt name.

  • Anchor text: If there are any texts that are added with hyperlinks, they are called anchor text. This text can redirect the navigation to the linked website. Anchor text helps to boost up the crawling process.Use of good hyperlinks can help to increase the quality of content of the website.

         The point to be noted here are:
    • Give no follow instruction while recommending untrustworthy websites to avoid passing link juice or equity power.
    • Anchor texts given to higher ranked trustworthy websites like Wikipedia can improve the ranking of the websites. Whereas anchor texts to shady websites can affect our websites ranks negatively. However getting link recommendation from higher ranked websites can have greater impact in ranking.
    • Never give anchor texts on focusing keywords as it may lead to promoting the recommended website over our own website.
    • Avoid getting hyperlink recommendation from shady or spam websites, which may affect the ranking negatively.
    • Avoid opening hyperlinks in the same window, which can cause in sharing equity.
